Dirt Cake

Dirt Cake

Labor Day is coming up.  Are you getting together with friends or family?  Do you have special treats you make for certain holidays?  Of course you do!  I think we have all had some version of dirt cake at least once in our lives.  Whether it is made to look like actual dirt, you know, in a pail with worms coming out or if it is just in a casserole dish – either way, it is always a favorite.

Dirt cake is what I request for my birthday.  I am actually not a huge fan of traditional cake.  Oh, I will make it and I will eat it but if I am going to request a special treat, 9 times out of 10, it will not be cake.

Now, if you know me, you know that I am not a fan of processed food products.  I try to cook with the real deal, however, there are some desserts for which I let my standards slide and this is one of them.  Also, I go for the brand names on this one too.  There aren’t that many ingredients so it is important for them to taste the best and let’s be honest, generic cream cheese or pudding or cookies just do not taste the same as the brand.  So pony up and get the brands here.

For this recipe, I used mint but feel free to use plain, fudge filled, whatever flavor you like.  It will make the whole dessert taste like that flavor so pick a good one!  You need to crush the Oreos.  I like them on the chunkier side so I put mine in a gallon freezer zip lock bag and step on them.  You could put them in the food processor but they tend to be a crushed finer and I am not a fan.

The first thing you will do is mix the room temperature cream cheese with the pudding and 2 1/2 cups of milk with a hand mixer.  Be sure to mix thoroughly until there are no little lumps of cream cheese.  Be patient, it will become smooth.  Then you will fold in the Cool Whip.  Be careful not to over mix.  You want it to stay fluffy!  Next you will layer the cake.

Begin with the pudding mix, then sprinkle a layer of Oreos, pudding, Oreos, pudding and Oreos.  Done!  Refrigerate for at least two hours and then enjoy!

Dirt Cake

Fluffy vanilla pudding, cream cheese, and Cool Whip mixed with crunchy Oreos make this dessert irresistible.

Prep Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 package Oreos
  • 8 oz cream cheese room temperature
  • 5.1 oz instant vanilla pudding
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 16 oz Cool Whip

Instructions

  1. Place all of the Oreos in the package in a gallon freezer bag.  Zip the bag and place on the floor to step on the Oreos to crush.  You could also use a hammer or something heavy to crush the Oreos.

  2. Combine the cream cheese, pudding, and milk in a large bowl with a hand mixer.  Mix until it is smooth with no lumps. Gently fold in the cool whip.

  3. In a 9 x 13 inch casserole dish, begin layering with 1/3 of the pudding mixture.  Sprinkle Oreo crumbles over the pudding evenly.  Repeat this two more times.  Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours.
