Nutella Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

Are you a Nutella fan?  It is okay if you aren’t.  Trust me, this recipe is for lovers and haters.  I happen to be a fan, but I know there are people out there who aren’t.  To be honest, if Nutella wasn’t in the name, I might not be able to tell that it was in there. That being said, if Nutella is not your thing, you can substitute it for something else – peanut butter, almond butter, cookie butter, chocolate spread.  Possibilities.  You are going to start with a chocolate chip cookie recipe that will be good to make into bars.  I happen to like this one Gabi found on Tasty’s site.  It has recently become one our our favorites and is perfect for a cookie bar.  I double it in the recipe.  I think it is fun to make it in a pizza pan, but you can make it in a half size cookie sheet or 9×13, just adjust the cooking time accordingly.

The topping is where the fun really begins.  Nutella, cream cheese, whip cream, and powdered sugar combine to make a creamy, not too sweet, melt-in-your-mouth, treat.

Drizzle some chocolate syrup on top and run a toothpick through in opposite directions for a fun design.  You have immediate fans!

  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips

  • 1/2 cup Nutella
  • 1 cup whip cream or whipped topping
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • chocolate syrup or hot fudge

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  Mix butter and sugars until no lumps appear.

  2. Add eggs and vanilla, salt and baking soda.  Add flour until combined and finally stir in chocolate chips.

  3. Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes, until cookie is cooked in the center.  Place on a wire rack and allow to cool completely before adding the topping.

  1. Mix all ingredients with a hand mixer until smooth.

  2. Spread on top of the cookie.  Drizzle the syrup or fudge in a back and forth pattern.  Run a tooth pick through it in opposite directions.  Cut in desired shapes and serve.
